When a year ends and a new one begins, it means that the Earth has completed one full journey around the Sun. During that journey, our planet is also spinning on its own axis. Earth completes one rotation roughly every 24 hours, creating what we call a day. Each hour is divided into 60 minutes, and every minute into 60 seconds. Using this traditional system, scientists once defined a second by dividing the average solar day into 86,400 equal parts.

However, there is a problem with this method. The length of a solar day is not perfectly constant. The motion of Earth can slightly change due to gravitational influences from the Moon, the Sun, and other celestial bodies. Because of these variations, scientists needed a more precise and stable way to measure time.

Today, time is measured using a far more scientific method based on the vibrations of atoms. In modern physics, the official definition of one second comes from the behavior of the cesium atom. A single second is defined as the time it takes for a cesium-133 atom to oscillate exactly 9,192,631,770 times between two radiation energy states. This definition has been officially used since 1967 and is explained in detail by the National Institute of Standards and Technology.

Astronomy also introduces another interesting way of thinking about time called a cosmic year. Our Sun is not stationary inside the Milky Way galaxy. Instead, it travels around the center of the galaxy in a vast orbit. Completing one full orbit around the galactic center takes about 225 million years. Astronomers call this enormous span of time a cosmic year.

According to current scientific estimates, the universe is about 13.7 billion years old. Numbers of this magnitude are difficult to imagine using ordinary years. That is why astronomers sometimes use larger cosmic scales like the cosmic year to understand the age and history of the universe.To estimate the age of the universe, astronomers measure how fast the universe is expanding. This expansion rate is known as the Hubble parameter, named after the famous astronomer Edwin Hubble. In the early twentieth century, Hubble observed that distant galaxies are moving away from us, and that the farther a galaxy is, the faster it appears to be receding. By studying this expansion, scientists can estimate how long the universe has been expanding, which gives us an approximate age of about 13.7 billion years.

From the spinning of Earth to the vibration of atoms and the motion of galaxies, time can be measured in many ways. What began as simple observations of the Sun and sky has evolved into one of the most precise measurements in modern science. Today, every second we experience is quietly counted by the rhythmic heartbeat of atoms, keeping the universe on schedule.
