The main barrier to communication between people of different countries is language. Helping to dissolve this barrier is Google’s translation service, Google Translate. Until recently, Google Translate was known primarily as a tool for converting text from one language to another. But by 2026, it has evolved into a complete language learning platform. Continuing this transformation, Google has introduced, for the first time, the ability to learn other languages starting from Bengali directly within the app.

Through Google’s new Language Practice feature, users can now learn languages according to their individual needs. Whether you want to learn only essential words for travel abroad or aim to speak fluently for professional purposes, the app creates customized practice sessions tailored to your goals. There is no extra effort required. Simply tapping the “Practice” option inside the app begins the learning process. The system focuses especially on listening and speaking skills. While using the app, artificial intelligence powered by Google’s Gemini model creates simulated real-life scenarios where users can practice understanding spoken words. If you hesitate while speaking, the app gently offers hints and guidance to help you continue.

These lessons, developed with input from educators and language experts, also track your progress and provide feedback over time. This allows learners to build confidence in speaking languages such as English, Spanish, or French without needing a teacher. According to Fatima Alam, Head of the Department of Audiology and Speech Language Pathology at Bangladesh University of Professionals, this new feature in Google Translate will be especially effective for individuals who experience linguistic hesitation or difficulty when learning new languages.

Another powerful feature, Live Translate, enables two people who speak different languages to communicate face-to-face without discomfort. If you speak in Bengali, the app instantly converts your speech into your partner’s language and displays the translation on screen. Likewise, when your partner responds in their own language, it is immediately translated back into Bengali. The system can even recognize pauses, regional accents, and vocal tone variations, allowing conversations to flow naturally without repeatedly pressing buttons. Currently, this feature supports more than 70 languages, including Bengali, Hindi, Spanish, French, and Korean.
