The world’s largest chip factory will be builtThe famous technology entrepreneur Elon Musk has planned to build the world’s largest chip factory ‘Terafab’. Referring to this new initiative as the next step in the technological advancement of human civilization, he said that the potential cost of the project is estimated at 20 to 25 billion US dollars. The project will be implemented by a joint venture of Tesla, SpaceX and XAI.
According to Musk’s plan, Terrafab will be set up next to Tesla’s Giga Texas factory in Austin, USA. The factory will produce about one million chip wafers based on 2 nanometer technology every month. Currently, the world’s top semiconductor manufacturer TSMC has set a target of producing about 140,000 2 nanometer wafers per month by the end of 2026. As such, the planned production capacity of Terrafab is several times higher than the existing industry standard.

Musk has also set ambitious goals for chip manufacturing. According to him, this factory will be able to produce 100 to 200 billion artificial intelligence (AI) and memory chips per year. A large part of these chips will be used by Tesla, especially for operating Tesla’s electric cars and robots.
Regarding the launch of the new factory, Elon Musk said that the pace at which existing suppliers such as Samsung, TSMC and Micron are increasing production is insufficient compared to Tesla’s needs. Building its own production capacity is the only realistic way to meet the needs.
According to experts, building advanced semiconductor factories is a very complex, expensive and time-consuming process. Achieving the capabilities of an institution like TSMC is not easy. For this reason, the importance of the semiconductor industry in global technology competition and geopolitics is increasing day by day. Similarly, setting up large-scale data centers in space is also considered a major technological challenge.
